James Duffy
Professional Counselor Intern

I am currently a Clinical Mental Health Counseling graduate student at Fairfield University with aspirations of becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor. I am currently in the practicum portion of my curriculum and am excited to be serving Renew Counseling in this capacity as an intern. My education at Fairfield University has provided me with ample education, preparation, and confidence to provide counseling services in this capacity. To this point, my education has covered topics of diagnosis and treatment, substance use and addiction, multicultural counseling, group psychotherapy, trauma and crisis intervention, and counseling theories to name a few. As such, I am well acquainted with theories and practices of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy with a broad interest in working with any and all populations. My success as a student in this program is marked by my membership to Fairfield University's chapter of the international counseling honor society, Chi Sigma Iota.

In addition to my enrollment at Fairfield University, I have also worked in the capacity of a community case manager for Mental Health Connecticut in Fairfield County for the past five years. In this role, the services I provided fluctuated between providing mental health sensitive support services, resource education, crisis intervention, psychoeducation and skill building interventions. My tenure in this role has helped me hone in on skills of active listening, empathy, and collaboration with collateral networks and resources. It is my hope to bring this culmination of experience and passion for support to my time as an intern with Renew Counseling, and to deepen my clinical skills further.
